Tech Tuesdays with Little Tech Girl

Welcome to Tech Tuesday’s with LittleTechGirl

Hi there Kidgrade.com readers. I am Kris Cain and every Tuesday starting today I plan to help you get your geek on with Tech Tuesdays. We will talk about family technology, home innovations, kids in tech, and more. In this first post I just wanted to tell you a little bit about me and my love of technology.

I blame my mother for my computer addiction. When I was about 9 years old my mom enrolled me in computer classes at the Museum of Science and Industry. That was back when the language of choice was BASIC. And our media for saving programs was what looked like an audio tape! I can remember one of the first programs that I wrote. It was a display of a huge flashing robot on the screen. My mom also purchased a Commodore 64 for home so that I could keep up my wonderful new programming skills. Wow, I think I still have my training manuals from that class somewhere.  Later, when she went to her own computer class at a city college, she did not have a babysitter, and so she took me to class with her. I don’t recall what the class was on, but she tells me that I used to raise my hand and answer questions. The Professor loved me.

Fast forward a few years and I got my hands on an IBM PS/2 model 80. This was a computer that was probably heavy enough to be used as a boat anchor. Actually, it probably would have caused the boat to sink. Although it was new, it was a throwaway for a company that had gone out of business. There were no manuals, no installation disks, no OS. I taught myself how to install Windows 3.1, hook up the 9600 baud modem, and get online. It was great.

These days I am a mother to 2 sets of twins. They keep me busy, but I have not let go of my love of computers. I’m still a geek. My 9-5 job is in IT. And when I am not at work, I’m blogging, editing photos, building websites, or repairing computers. I just have to keep busy. I can’t help it. I’ve always been that way. People often ask me how I get it all done. My answer is “I usually don’t”.
